Facebook and FriendFeed deal - nearly $50 Million

Mashable has some 411…

Amplifyd from mashable.com

Facebook Paid Nearly $50 Million for FriendFeed

Now, we have what looks like a deal price. According to The Wall Street Journal, Facebook paid nearly $50 million to acquire FriendFeed: $15 million in cash and $32.5 million in Facebook (Facebook) stock. According to the report, the stock part of the deal values Facebook at $6.5 billion – the same valuation that Facebook employees were allowed to sell stock at last month.

Twitter + “Opt-in” Beacon = Justbought.it?

Amplifyd from mashable.com
justboughtit
Part Twitter, part TwitPic (Twitpic), and part Google Maps (Google Maps), the site encourages users to tweet whenever they’ve “just bought something” (get it?) with a picture of the product and the location where they purchased it
The site then takes this data to create a community of Twitter shoppers. Upon logging in (using Twitter OAuth), you’ll see any recent purchases from your area, by category (shoes, art, etc.) or just browse the latest tweets sent out from JustBought.it shoppers
Much like StockTwits (which bought Chart.ly), JustBought.it is attempting to establish community around something people are already doing on Twitter – sharing their shopping experience. Although the site certainly faces the issue of needing lots of users to become exciting, it seems they have a solid strategy in place to get thereRead more at mashable.com

I was initially pessimistic about this concept. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized how great people’s desire to publish their lifestream is…including what they purchase. As an opt-in service rather than what beacon tried to do, it might just work. I have not tried the service and the execution of the idea is critical, but there are potential ecommerce, lead generation, and advertising opportunities that could provide justbought.it with a rare money making formula.

Facebook Gets 700,000+ New Users a Day

holy shit.

Amplifyd from www.insidefacebook.com
It’s been just under 90 days since Facebook announced it has crossed the 200 million active user mark. Today, that number is somewhere around 240 million, perhaps even close to 250 million. If Facebook were a country, it would now have the 4th largest population in the world.
its growth rate seems to have again significantly increased in recent weeks to around 700,000 to 750,000 new users per day
about 70% of that growth is happening outside the United StatesRead more at www.insidefacebook.com

Facebook Catches MySpace for U.S. Users

Good to know. But, what caught me was the huge percentage of users outside the U.S…perhaps Amplify will gain traction with global users as well.

Amplifyd from finance.yahoo.com

MySpace’s user base has stagnated at about 125 million worldwide users, while Facebook said its usage has doubled to more than 200 million in less than a year.

But until now, MySpace still had the edge among U.S. users. Numbers from comScore show that in May, MySpace and Facebook both had about 70 million users apiece in the United States.

Digg Launches Facebook Connect

Pretty solid endorsement from one of the top Facebook blogs…

Amplifyd from www.insidefacebook.com
Nearly a year after Digg announced it would support Facebook Connect, the integration has finally gone live. Now, Digg users can login, share, and find and invite friends through Facebook Connect.
Overall, Digg’s Facebook Connect implementation looks great. It takes advantage of all the key features of Facebook Connect - authentication, content distribution, and enhanced social context - which should increase the quality and authenticity of Diggs and Comments on the siteRead more at www.insidefacebook.com

Facebook, Firefox, Twitter Lead App, Web Usage

The data (sample sz. about 75,000) suggests to me that Amplify is clearly playing in the right sandbox…exciting. Chrome’s growth though not surprising is impressive.

Amplifyd from gigaom.com
Facebook and Mozilla Firefox are the applications used most across different platforms, according to data collected by Wakoopa, a software-oriented social network.

Twitter clients Tweetdeck and Twhirl are continuing to see strong usage and growth, much like Twitter. The most popular newcomer among Twitter clients, as well as overall apps, for the Mac is Destroy Twitter. These numbers are in sync with web usage data reported by others research companies as well.

Google Chrome is making a significant impact on the browser market, with 15 percent usage across all countries and age groups
one thing that struck me was how people below 30 are completely ambivalent towards Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and prefer using alternative browsers

Nick O’Neill’s got some insights on Facebook Announcement

As always, I suggest Nick’s 411 on the Facebook Announcement…

Amplifyd from www.allfacebook.com

What Is Facebook Opening Up To Developers On Monday?

This evening Jessica Vascellaro wrote about the expected announcement stating core parts would be opened, “namely the information that appears in the stream of updates on users’ homepages and profiles.”
We’ve been writing for some time that Facebook is expected to open up two things: the feed and shared items. If developers could track shared items, this would be a huge opportunity and it would fall in line with Facebook’s continued assault on Twitter. Read more at www.allfacebook.com

Big announcement from Facebook coming tomorrow?

Rather than geting into the speculation of what this could be, just a heads up to everyone to keep an eye on this.  Let’s be sure to discuss any implications for amplify after the accouncement is made.

Amplifyd from www.techcrunchit.com

The Wall Street Journal is reporting Facebook will open up most if not all of their user-contributed data to developers at a developer event tomorrow. This has been long expected and will likely trigger a wave of third-party integration of Facebook streams with other popular feeds, most notably that of Twitter.

Big Decision for Zuckerberg

TechCrunch’s perspective on the latest funding decision for Zuckerberg…

Amplifyd from www.techcrunch.com
Decision Time For Facebook: Term Sheet Received At $2 Billion Valuation

Will Facebook take the expensive new money from General Atlantic? They may be forced to. They’re burning as much as $20 million a month in cash and are dealing with ridiculous growth. They likely have less than two years runway left, and possibly significantly less if they continue to add new users by the tens of millions that are currently flocking there every month.

Navigating the Challenges of the Real-Time Web

Interesting post by Jeremiah from Forrester. Trying to keep up with the info flow is indeed a challenge and like he notes, Friendfeed’s “pause” button in its redesign is a nod to the issue. One of the great features of Amplify Clogs is that the entire conversation stays with the content - on a permalink. So, if I’ve missed a Twitter or FB update, but i’ve “followed” a Clog, i’m notified and can catch up on my time, even though I’ve missed “it” in real-time…Kind of like Tivo for social media ;)

Amplifyd from www.web-strategist.com
As the web continues to move faster and faster towards real-time (we see this in Twitter and elements of Facebook), it creates several challenges:
  • If you’re not watching all the time, you’ll miss something
  • An incredible amount of hay is created with very few needles
  • Managing these feeds take effort, you have to setup filters, lists, groups, and manage it.
  • You’re going to get less work done if you watch, and participate in the real-time web.
  • The big challenge: with many of us creating our own rivers of news, who has time to drink it all in?
